We operate a furniture factory in central Java, Indonesia. All of our wood is kiln dried and bought only from government plantations.
Every piece that we sell is handcrafted from solid mahogany and teak. Our furniture is constructed the same way furniture was made 200 years ago. Not cookie cutter assembled, but one man making one piece by hand. Many families have made the same style furniture for many generations and pass their knowledge on to their children. So furniture crafting is not a vocation but a way of life for these people.
Because of the uniqueness of hand made furniture, no two pieces will be exactly the same. Heights and widths are usually varied 1/2-1 inch. Many people consider our custom built furniture high quality and works of art. But we take great efforts to make sure our furniture is of the highest quality.
Before our furniture is finished it is inspected for defects and for dryness. We use modern moisture detecting devices to ensure that cracking and shrinking are held to a minimum.
Our furniture is treated for powder post beetles and other wood eating insects by dipping in chemical pesticide vats. When our container are loaded we use the strongest fumigation allowed.
After the finishing process our furniture is inspected and tested again before wrapping.
A moderate amount of drying is to be expected. The differences in climate and the fact that most modern homes are climate controlled can reek havoc on solid wood furniture. Minor seaming should be colored using stain markers.
The best way to prevent cracking is to avoid placing solid wood near a heating/air vent. Pieces should be aged for a few months before they are placed near these vents to avoid unnecessary problems.
